Zeiler Partners was founded in Vienna in 2014 by Gerold Zeiler, the former head of the arbitration practice at another GAR 100 firm from Austria, Schönherr. He brought a team with him to the new boutique.

A former president of the Austrian Arbitration Association, Zeiler regularly sits as arbitrator and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He’s joined at the new firm by partners Lisa Beisteiner and Alfred Siwy, who bring years of experience in ICSID and UNCITRAL work.

The practice received a further boost in 2015 with the hire of Christoph Schreuer as of counsel. Known to some as “Mr ICSID”, he’s the author of the definitive commentary on the ICSID Convention. Another recent addition to the partnership is Markus Schifferl, who joined from Torggler.

The firm’s lawyers have advised high-profile names from several industries, including Shell, RWE, Siemens, GE Capital, Thales, Deutsche Bank, and car companies Fiat and Seat.

Nearly two years in, the firm already has four investment treaty cases on its books. Siwy is defending the Czech Republic in three cases under SCC and UNCITRAL rules; while Zeiler and Siwy are acting for Bosnia-Herzegovina in a €700 million ICSID case brought by a Slovenian investor.

Zeiler and Siwy are also acting for Shell in an ICC gas transport dispute, while other work includes cases for a Swedish furniture producer and a German and French energy client in the gas storage market.

Client comment

A lawyer at the Czech finance ministry says it is “very happy” with the firm’s work on its behalf. “Zeiler.Partners are a pleasure to deal with and provide excellent value for money. Alfred Siwy impressed us with his hands-on approach and extensive knowledge of public international law.”

A German business advisory company with whom the firm has worked describes it as “one of the go-to firms for arbitration in Austria”. adding: “They have a very good business acumen, a lucid mind and a cooperative working style. They are passionate and detail oriented in those areas of the case where it is required. They are a winning team.”

zeiler.partners has been established in 2014. It is a dispute resolution boutique currently comprising of six partners with different specialisations in dispute resolution, four of them concentrating on international commercial arbitration and investment arbitration. Although the firm only was founded in 2014, all partners have considerable experience and are well-regarded specialists in their fields of law. The team has a wide range of experience in arbitrations under the ICC, UNCITRAL, VIAC Rules and in disputes arising from bilateral investment treaties (including the representation of investors and governments in ICSID arbitration proceedings and investment arbitrations conducted under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and Stockholm Rules). They regularly sit as arbitrators. A special focus of the firm lies on energy and investment arbitration. The partners of zeiler.partners also represent clients before Austrian courts in all areas of commercial law. They have chosen the smaller setting of a boutique firm where their full attention lies on the personal service to their clients.
