Leading Indian law firm AZB joined the GAR 100 in 2010 when it was in the process of linking with Clifford Chance. That tie no longer exists but the firm remains in the ranking on its own merit. If anything, its independence makes it more useful to know.
AZB’s reputation owes much to the personality and profile of founding partner Zia Mody in Mumbai, once named one of India’s 25 most powerful women by Business Today. Formerly of Baker & McKenzie in New York, Mody was until recently a vice president of the LCIA and ranked one of the highest-regarded figures in India in GAR’s “Who’s Who of Arbitration in India” in 2008. Her reputation has grown considerably since then.
The firm boasts some 275 lawyers and has offices in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune, as well as Mumbai. Clients have included Vedanta Resources, the Tata Group, KPMG, Philip Morris, Dhariwal Industries, Bank of New York Mellon, Lehman Brothers and US cable television network ESPN. In the past year it has acted for IBM, Reliance, BG Group, BIC Clichy, Essar Wind Power and Schlumberger Asia.
In 2013, the firm lost prominent Bangalore-based partner Shreyas Jayasimha, who left to found his own disputes boutique. Jayasimha had represented LCIA India as an amicus curiae in the landmark Balco case before the Indian Supreme Court. AZB also recruited Nikhil Sakhardande as of counsel.
AZB has represented leading corporate houses and multinationals in multi-jurisdictional arbitration matters governed by various rules including those of the ICC, UNCITRAL, Swiss Chambers of Commerce, London Maritime Arbitrators Association Singapore Court of International Arbitration and London Court of International Arbitration. The Firm has also been involved in arbitration proceedings under foreign laws such as New York law and English law where Indian law issues underscored the arbitration proceedings, in addition to numerous arbitrations sited within and outside India governed by Indian law.
The Firm has handled complex commercial litigation and arbitration including conducting complex cross examination and trials of intricate questions of law and fact. The experience in arbitration and litigation is across almost every industry including construction, real estate, information technology, aviation, banking and finance, infrastructure, etc.
Zia Mody was a Vice President on the London Court of International Arbitration (2010 - 2013). She has recently selected as being among the world’s pre-eminent commercial arbitration specialists by The International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration.
AZB remains at the forefront of cutting edge matters and is heavily involved in international arbitrations before various international arbitral institutions, as well as enforcement of interim awards, which proceedings are currently ongoing and sub-judice.
