Over the years it has represented the Russian government as well as international businesses in major commercial disputes. An example of this work came in 2008, when corporate partner Dimitry Afansiev was retained by BP in the multibillion dollar tussle with its joint venture partner over shares in TNK-BP.
The firm is based in Moscow and St Petersburg, but also has an outpost in London. The arbitration practice is led by Victor Dumler, Ilya Nikiforov and Evgeny Raschevsky. In addition to his work as counsel, Dumler is a regular contributor to GAR. The firm’s chairman, Dimitry Afansiev, is on the board of directors of aluminium producer Rusal. The firm is at present in the top tier of ranking lists for disputes work in Russia, and has won several awards from other publishers for its contentious work. Nikiforov recently caused a stir at an IBA conference in Kiev by suggesting that reforms to the country’s civil and procedural codes are set to give Russia one of the most modern and arbitration-friendly judicial systems in the world, an argument that met with some scepticism from other delegates.
