GAR 100 - 4th Edition

Akinci Law Office

18 February 2011

Akinci became the first Turkish firm to enter the GAR 100 last year.

Who’s Who Name:
Ziya Akinci

Professor Ziya Akinci – whose father, Orhan Akinci, established the firm in 1984 – is described by one source as “one of the best arbitrators in the country.” He’s recognised in the fields of construction, energy and utilities in particular.

Akinci is acting – alongside Latham & Watkins – for ATA Construction, Industrial and Trading Company in continuing ICSID proceedings against Jordan over a dyke built on the Dead Sea. With his wife, Karen, he successfully represented a Turkish hotel investor in the first arbitration to be brought against Kyrgyzstan at ICSID. Akinci also advised on a highly publicised battle between Turkish telecoms company Cukurova and Swedish-Finnish mobile phone operator TeliaSonera over control of Turkcell (a company in which Russia’s Alfa group had obtained shares). In that matter, the firm represented Cukurova alongside two Swiss firms, Lenz & Staehelin and Tavernier Tschanz.

This past year the firm has expanded into bigger and plush new premises in Bebek, Istanbul. Akinci is a member of the ICC court.
