Mr Smith has served as counsel or arbitrator in arbitrations administered by international and regional arbitral institutions, including the ICC, ICSID, ICDR, PCA, AAA and others, in proceedings conducted in English, Spanish and Portuguese. These arbitration matters have related to infrastructure projects, corporate disputes, distribution and licensing agreements, mining and airport concessions, and others. Many of these claims were regarding disputes of more than US$1 billion in value. Mr Smith has worked in a variety of roles with extensive experience in the cross-examination of technical experts. Mr Smith is one of the founders of GST LLP and serves as its managing partner.
Mr Smith also appears in state and federal courts throughout the US representing individuals and companies in various types of commercial litigation, including litigation related to the enforcement of arbitration awards, proceedings seeking discovery in aid of foreign proceedings, defence of securities claims, and other commercial matters at all stages of trial and appeal. Litigation matters relate to many sectors, including securities and financial transactions, information technology, real estate, construction and international trade.
