Charles Claypoole

Charles Claypoole is a senior associate in the Latham & Watkins International Arbitration Group. He has particular expertise in public international law, including investment treaty arbitration, and international commercial arbitration. He is recommended in the 2011 edition of Legal 500 UK for his expertise in public international law and described as having 'deep knowledge of international boundary disputes and the Law of the Sea'.Mr Claypoole advises states and private clients on a number of contentious and non-contentious public international law and related dispute resolution issues, including: the protection of international investments under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties; state sovereignty over natural resources; land and maritime boundary issues; the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); UN, EU and domestic trade sanctions regimes; international humanitarian and human rights law. He has appeared before a variety of international judicial and arbitral bodies including the International Court of Justice, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, ICSID, ICC, LCIA and ad hoc arbitral tribunals.Mr Claypoole has recently appeared as counsel in several investment treaty arbitrations, including the recent ICSID arbitration, GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft v Ukraine, in which he acted for Ukraine. He is currently advising several state clients, including Ukraine and the Republic of Macedonia, and investors on pending investment treaty arbitrations.
