António Sampaio Caramelo graduated from the law school at the Classic University of Lisbon (1972) and completed postgraduate studies at the same law school (1972-1973). He was admitted to the Portuguese Bar Association in 1973. António has practised law as in-house counsel of several companies, and, later, as an independent lawyer or as member of small law firms. Since 2001 he has been partner at the firm Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva & Associados. In his professional practice, he has mainly dealt with areas of corporate and commercial law, the legal regime of state-owned companies, public procurement contracts, public service concessions and also commercial arbitration. António was visiting professor at the law school of the New University of Lisbon from 2005 to 2007, and was responsible for teaching a semester course on commercial arbitration (domestic and international). He is a member of the board of directors of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Laboratory of that law school. António is the author of several articles published in Portuguese and foreign legal journals or reviews, notably on commercial arbitration matters. He is also a member of the International Bar Association (arbitration committee), the Club Español de Arbitraje and the Portuguese Arbitration Association.
