Dr Johanne Cox is a partner and the head of international arbitration at Matouk Bassiouny. Johanne’s practice focuses on the Middle East and North Africa. Johanne has over 14 years’ experience in international arbitration and has practiced in Egypt for the past five years. Prior to Egypt, Johanne practiced arbitration in London and Paris at leading international law firms. Johanne specialises in investment treaty arbitration and the protection of foreign investments. In addition, Johanne has significant experience handling large, high-value, international commercial arbitrations in Egypt and the wider MENA region. As well as representing foreign investors in investment treaty disputes against Egypt, Johanne also represents foreign investors in investment treaty disputes against other states, most recently the Ukraine. In addition, Johanne has represented governments in ICSID disputes. Johanne holds a doctorate in public international law and expropriation of investment.
