Risk management: the GC’s varied role
The concept of legal risk is huge, and knowing how to evaluate it is a very tricky concept. However, a GC must not only understand risk, but also how to use it to set targets for the team, and budgeting and staffing requirements. How can GCs correctly categorise risk to determine priorities and develop workflow processes?
Discussion led by: Ana Siegel and Janet Diaz, Fox International
HR in LatAm: managing high-level employee crises
The clash between HR and legal is at its sharpest when concerns and problems with high-level employees come into play, especially in an international context. What is your role, and how and when should you exercise it?
Discussion led by: Alejandra Flah, senior regional counsel, Citibank
11.30am Coffee
12.00 – roundtable continues
The birth of data protection
Latin American countries are beginning to pay more attention to data protection issues, which have long been critical to EU and US companies. What plans and policies will you have to put in place to keep up to date?
Discussion led by: David Wheeler, of counsel, Greenberg Traurig LLP
Third-party compliance
US regulators are ever more focused on indirect relationships and third party business deals when assessing the effectiveness of a company’s compliance programme, and when considering investigations. However, lots of companies do business this way in Latin America – what should the optimum third-party risk management programme entail?
Discussion led by: Ronald Ramirez, Regional Legal Counsel for Central America and Caribbean, HP
1.00pm – lunch
2.30pm – What the future holds for you
Ongoing economic concerns, globalisation and a redefinition of the in-house counsel are three factors compelling a fundamental change in the legal profession. Our regular consultant, Pam Woldow of Edge International, will guide us through some of the possible futures, and how that will affect you and your company.
4.00pm Coffee
4.30pm-6.00pm - final roundtable session
How to set goals for your team
Setting targets for a legal department is a hard task in a company, which tends to seek concrete progress. How should you be setting the right competencies and targets for your team members to ensure they climb as high as possible, and also stay within your company as long as possible?
Presentation by: Violeta Longino, general counsel, Desca
AFAs – worth the bother?
A recent survey suggests only a quarter of GCs are truly happy with alternative fee arrangements. Is the problem a lack of good structures, a too-cautious imposition, or a rejection by law firms? Or do they only actually work well in a small set of circumstances?
Discussion led by: Clare Bolton, LACCA
Crisis management – what is the GCs’ role?
Today, when a huge crisis hits the company, it can come down to the GC to manage the issues, including appropriate responses to the government, the media, the shareholders, stakeholders, the public, and more. What policies and processes should you have in place already, and what lessons can be learned from current examples in the market?
Discussion led by: Charles Bakaly, US crisis and risk management practice, Edelman Communications
6.00pm Close of meeting – Cocktails, followed by 8pm – LACCA sponsors Greenberg Traurig LLP are delighted to invite all delegates for dinner.
